What are Ceramic Clear Braces?

Ceramic braces are generally clear and almost unnoticeable.

The ceramic brackets are made of translucent material. So they blend in with your natural tooth color. When cleaned properly after eating, these braces remain almost invisible for the most part.

Yes, they're definitely less noticeable when compared to traditional metal braces. This is the main reason for their high popularity.

Unlike traditional stainless steel metal braces, ceramic braces won’t make your smile look "metallic." So they are much sought after by patients concerned about the appearance of their smile.

Additionally, ceramic braces are designed so that they won't stain or discolor over long periods of time.

How is it done?

For most part the process is very similar to metal braces. The first step would be to decide if ceramic braces are the best option for you. If lot of tooth movements and manipulations are necessary, metal braces could be a better choice for you.

The major disadvantage about ceramic braces is that they are generally more expensive when compared to traditional metal braces. But it may be possible for you to get ceramic braces on the top teeth only; and the traditional metal braces on the bottom teeth. This could save on your treatment cost.

What are the risks and other considerations?

Ceramic braces have improved a great deal over the years. Yet, they are still a bit more prone to fracture than metal.

Clear braces also have a slightly increased risk of damaging enamel upon removal

Do the clear braces stain over time?

The brackets themselves usually do not stain. But the elastic ligatures that hold the arch wire to the bracket may stain. However, the ligatures are changed at each adjustment. So, even if your ligatures stain, you will have to wear them only for a short time.

What colors of ligatures resist stains the best?

Clear or White colored ligatures stains the most. If you are worried about staining the ligatures or if you consume more staining food types such as curry, mustard, black coffee, red wine etc., we recommend that you consider ligatures in smoke, blue or other darker colors.

What about smoking cigarettes, while wearing braces?

It is generally a good idea to refrain from smoking when you wear clear braces. It can stain your ligatures and possibly even the ceramic brackets.

How often should I clean my teeth when I have the ceramic clear braces?

For any type of braces, we ask our patients to clean their teeth after every meal, and floss at least once every day. We advise our patients to carry a dental kit with them all the time, so that they can clean their teeth even when they eat at a restaurant. Additionally, when you wear braces, we ask that you consider getting one or two extra cleanings per year from your dentist or dental hygienist.

Ceramic braces are a bit more expensive than traditional metal braces. The cost is mostly dependent on the extent of correction required for you, how long your treatment plan will be, etc. Each case is different.
